Harmony Korine's Gummo crafts a surreal take on the mundane, displaying pure poverty's viscerality and the disgusting magic and wonder that comes with harsh shortcomings.
The world of Gummo is bare and dirty, the characters in most cases are literally bare and dirty and still, through the relatable feelings of self-doubt, isolation, and disgust with one's true self, we are able to sympathize with and understand even the most immoral or unjust actions taken by the characters.
