  The first Gladiator was formative for me. I was seventeen the year it came out, I went three times to see it at the cinema (one of them a small screen that doesn't exist anymore, the underground trains rumbling underneath every so often). I felt like I'd never seen anything like it, the colour and tones, the scope of the setting, the quality of the production and sets and costuming, the heightened emotional tone of the storylines and characters.   The Florida Project 2017

  The depth and shapes to all the colour. The way dialogue and time and settings are structured. The way the thing moves and rests and breathes and races, all under careful control. It all feels simultaneously so full and so precarious, magical and real. A wonderful film.

  The undertaking is impressive, and it's all sweet, subtle Linklater charm, and it doesn't do anything really wrong, but I'm ultimately not that interested in this simple and narrow perspective on the world. Couple that with a general lack of tension throughout and it left me with a smile and shrug.
