Glacially paced, yet oddly hypnotizing. The scene where Casey Affleck is stuck on a rock was inspired filmmaking—I only wish it could have been one unbroken take instead of how it was presented with two cuts.
Microcosmos 1996

Lovely film. There is so much beauty in this world—a single meadow contains unbelievable complexity.
I can’t know for certain, but it sure feels like this film directly inspired A Bug’s Life and Antz.

Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary 1997

There’s basically a direct line from this film to the reality tv competition shows of the 2000s (Survivor, Big Brother, The Mole, etc). The techniques are all here, confessionals, ordinary people in an extraordinary situation, storylines that build and pay off for each of the key players, and meditations on what a contest like this says about the contestants and humanity. Mandatory viewing for reality tv fans.
Little Big Man 1970

Oh I hated this one. Everything falls so flat. The jokes aren’t funny, the drama is cheap and unearned, and Dustin Hoffman just seems lost the whole time. I couldn’t wait for the movie to end—too bad it was almost 2.5 hours long. This is my 20th dislike out of 2700+ movies watched, it was that bad of an experience for me. Bleh.
