Clunky metaphors about generational trauma and toxic masculinity abound in Leigh Whannell’s meh second stab at reimagining one of Universal’s Classic Monsters. Despite advancements in cinematic technology, this picture offers us a werewolf that’s more Gollum than lycanthrope, with the film’s transformation (often the centrepiece of any werewolf tale) failing to come close to those of American Werewolf in London, Gingersnaps, or, indeed, its 1941 namesake.
