Get this girl a tissue!
The film didn’t rely on cheap scares, but played and toyed with your own imagination, making the horror something felt rather than seen. There is no denying that this movie shaped a genre of POV horror movies for the 2000's and early to mid 2010's.
The first 15 minutes were masterfully done, but the rest of it was nothing special. I believe it is so beloved because you can relate to pretty much any character, whether it's Carl in losing a loved one, chasing your dreams like Russell, not feeling as though you belong with your people like Doug, and so on.
Another creative treasure. It was not Studio Ghibli's best by any means (not even close) but it was still a great watch that pulled the heart strings. I didn’t even realize until half way through that all the plane sounds were made by people! The vision, originality and ingenuity of Hayao Miyazaki is inspirational.
