Questlove is smart enough to let the camera linger on his interview subjects for what seems to be a second or two too long, letting the moment play out in real time. Sometimes he only captures a look or a reaction. Other times, his subject makes an off-the-cuff remark that sums up the moment perfectly.

Except for some dumb lines in Clarke’s party monologue which give away the race, age, and gender of the screenwriter, I found this to be a pretty solid effort. Friedkin manages to keep things tense for most of the runtime while also playing with the ambiguity of the situation and the various ways people can view the same series of events.
I appreciated the ambiguity most of all, which I thought got lost after Queeg testified for the defense only…
