Device of a man losing a life’s worth of memories sounds compelling, but on reflection most kauriskmaki characters could be without pasts and it wouldn’t make any meaningful difference to the films. So yeah, we end up in familiar Aki territory here. But absolutely no complaints on that front. Gorgeous cinematography as per and one of the more far fetched excuses for another beer - ‘maybe there’s a blood clot where the memory is, alcohol will dissolve it.’

My first Orange Wednesdays probably since ~2010, attended by the heroic trio Boullier, Mangham, Hopkin. Baffling, convoluted film, enjoyable for these same reasons. Sam made a very tasty kimchi rice.

Was completely gripped by this. Timely reminder of our ability to tolerate and co-operate with different attitudes and ways of being in testing times. The frantic neuroticism of the lemur, the cool distance of the secretary bird, the playfulness of the labrador, the nonchalance of the capybara. They find ways of accommodating, without necessarily understanding, each other when it’s needed most.

Also a great take down of speciesism, particularly when the secretary bird rejects the biases of its kind to stand up for a member of another species and recognise them as a peer. The secretary bird ascending got me right in the feelies. Vital stuff.

Liked how this tackled big themes in a really accessible way. Immortality, identity, colonialism, religion, othering, all explored through a lighthearted spaceship romp.

Also like the fact that Thomas turgoose and Tim key are in a Bong joon ho film.

But it fell a bit flat for me. Thematically and stylistically felt like a cross between Okja and Snowpiercer, both of which I way preferred, mainly because the issues at play in those films are really clear cut and the message fully lands.

Bought a hot chocolate to take in, was lukewarm at best.
