  I am astonished that someone with such an eye for a beautiful shot can now turn out something that looks so made for TV. Bad made for TV. Stupid, stupid casting, bad writing, awful acting... This would never be a good film, but when compared to Deep Red or Bird With The Crystal Plumage it's an embarrassment.

  An awesome, terrifying journey into insanity as a marriage, and the couple in it, break down in spectacular fashion. Sam Neill gives a performance of such utter derangement he makes Nicolas Cage seem subtle and understated. Isabella Adjani spends half the film staring and half the film screaming - especially the extraordinary scene in a subway where her performance goes so far over the top in becomes genuinely terrifying, calling to mind medieval woodcuts of bedeviled witches in a frenzy. Carlo Rambaldi's work is incredible, visceral and repulsive. Not for everyone, but well worth a shot if you don't mind your cinema unhinged and full-throttle.
