Did I like this movie? I reckon
Was it "good"? Naur
Grading on the "low-budget horror b-movie" curve:
- Campier than I usually go for.
- Definitely peaks in the second act.
- The heart and chemistry between the leads could make this movie a mainstream queer success if you changed every single aspect of the movie.
- Finally a piece of queer media that validates my dislike of cis drag.
- Let those of us trans girls who *haven't* got ourselves into a life or death situation because of a cute lesbian with pretty eyes cast the first stone.
Approx 15 minutes of the runtime consists of entrancing hallucinatory interludes, fantastic application of miniatures and practical fx, Drew Starkey's well-composed backside, and Jason Schwartzman positively stealing the show with an aplomb usually reserved for heist levels of larceny.
The remaining 2 hours is William S Burroughs faithfully rendered: semi-autobiographical indulgence of a semi-insufferable ass that moves at a pace somewhere between crawling and languorous (depending on your charitability - I lean towards the former), made bearable by the gorgeous cinematography of Luca Guadagnino and his team (allusions to Burroughs' murdering of his wife notwithstanding).
Great acting all around. I still don't understand gay men.
Strongest and prettiest trans metaphor this millennial has ever seen. Watched immediately after top surgery and bawled. If I had watched immediately after starting HRT I might have needed inpatient psychiatric care.
Edit: this movie gave me nightmares last night about my favorite childhood TV shows, my middle school girlfriend, and trans(neo?)vaginal ultrasounds. I can't remember the last time a horror movie was good enough to give me nightmares - I don't think The Substance even did. Adding half a star for that.
