There are ways to tear down idols and make gods human. This is not one of them. What the heck did I even watch? Not only was it paced so fast as to be little more than a TikTok clip/highlight reel of *some* of Napoleon's key moments interspersed with him being an absolute loser, it also explained absolutely nothing about why particular things happened or were done. The production value is high but not worthy of the film it was attached to, and that's really the only good thing about this one.

For something that was so, so influential to the politics of the early 20th century in France and its surrounding countries, Polanski somehow manages to make it seem like a relatively small issue. Where are the burnings of effigies of Dreyfus? Where are the hot debates on this issue in civil society that were mocked for their ubiquitousness like how we joke about our racist uncles at Thanksgiving (not American, do not quote)?
