    La Cocina

La Cocina experiments with a lot of different styles whilst remaining aesthetically consistent. The lighting is brilliant, especially the close-ups in the kitchen and that one blue scene.
The farcical long takes are the standouts, but I appreciate that the more contemplative narratives are given enough time as well. Each minor character has a moment to reveal their personality, however brief, which is vital for the film’s commentary on multiculturalism.

    Captain America: Brave New World

    ★★½

Anthony Mackie is a good Captain America, and his relationship with Isaiah Bradley gives an interesting dimension to the character. The Leader was an intriguing villain, even if the film didn’t quite do him justice.

The film’s approach to Red Hulk was a strange decision. He’s almost set up as a twist villain, despite being heavily included in marketing for the film, meaning there is a disconnect between the characters and the audience that the film never resolves. The side characters besides Isaiah Bradley are mostly irrelevant.

An incredibly moving film. Using former Sing Sing inmates is a masterstroke as nothing exemplifies the programme‘s impact more than seeing the lives it has shaped.

The film has a fuzzy appearance, almost like a mirage, due to the 16mm film it is shot on. It helps give the film a more realistic look, rather than being too modern or polished.

The story is simple, but is elevated by how authentically and affectionately this story is told, allowing for a much greater depth of emotion than in a less focussed screenplay. Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin’s performances are colossal.

    ‘The Outrun’ Review: 7/10

A powerful film with a very strong lead performance. The film is very raw, both in its message and its cinematography. This is its greatest strength for the portions set in the Orkney Islands, allowing the setting’s natural beauty to shine through; I particularly enjoyed the focus on wildlife.

These scenes should be given more breathing room from the more oppressive London scenes; the way the film is edited never quite allows the tone to settle…
