    Mulholland Drive

    ★★★★

Certainly better understood a second time around a few years older, but MAN this one is wild. Aside from some banter between our leads and some humorous vignettes, Lynch masterfully drapes everything in mystery and tension (sooooo many POV shots walking through hallways). The use of dreams and nonchronological storytelling can be overwhelming, but services the film's thesis very well. Mulholland Drive shows the gross tribulations actresses have to undergo in the industry, and shames Hollywood for treating them so disposably/interchangeably.

    Captain America: Brave New World

    ★★

Some fine ideas here, especially from the perspective of an MCU installment first and an actual movie second, but all of the coolest developments were spoiled in the trailer. The action choreography had highlights but occasionally felt too floaty with not enough impact. Only traces of satisfying character arcs, and far too toothless to be the political thriller it shows glimpses of.

If this has to be a thing that is made, I hope it's as an anthology that follows different and more interesting characters, in rooms with more cohesive theming and relation to the plot. Please, God, not Escape Room on a plane.

    Nosferatu

    ★★★★½

Despite being Eggers' most "normal" film, Nosferatu is still blanketed in his style, creating a dreary, gothic atmosphere for the entire runtime. The ever-encroaching dread is omnipresent but slow, allowing plenty of time to linger in beautiful shots and explore the leads' inner depth. In this way, the classic vampire story is a perfect fit for the director who helped mainstream "elevated" horror.

Some displays of hysteria fell flat and lingered too long for me, but they all service the tone and plot. I was too engrossed in the themes to fault the movie much, with Depp's character having a very poignant and intriguing story.
