American Graffiti 1973
Surprisingly gentle and at times beautiful for a film about juiced up cars and super-hetero boy racers. Come for the stylised 70s atmosphere and cheesy American teen archetypes, stay for the mesmerising driving sequences and genuinely funny dialogue. The frequently problematic sexual politics gives a harsh (but probably needed) intervention into the modern viewer's romanticisation of the time period, but dreamy wide shots of teens rock'n'rolling in a school gym make it difficult not to feel nostalgic.
