This film is so about AI that Wallace and Gromit might as well have taken hammers to a server farm. It’s also very funny.

Operation Mincemeat 2021
Rumbles along with a drama that feels neither urgent nor filmic, which is impressive for a film about spies in WWII. Maybe it was a metaphor for how the invasion of Italy was ultimately pretty inconsequential.

Longlegs 2024
Not really a horror film kind of person, but I really enjoyed how this built dread. Felt very Lovecraftian in some ways: an inability to look at things the way are, or to comprehend what's truly happening - but no tentacle monsters. I thought Nic Cage's performance was incredible, walking the tight-rope of clownish-ness and true terror. I saw it as a kind of synecdoche for the film, baffling in a frightening sort of way, and an abject refusal to be easily digestible. Easy to mock, hard to truly dismiss.

Speak No Evil 2024
Fantastic thriller/horror that builds menace beautifully, before unleashing itself. I really loved the way it roots its horror is social interactions, and acquiescing to what we know is wrong because it’s easy.
The cast are fantastic, the writing is taut, the whole thing works together like a well-built engine.Translated from by
