  I'm sorry, I just can't get past the over-emphasis on class and lifestyle. Lithgow's character paints, Tomei's character is a novelist, the son wants to go on a trip to France, they sit around and drink wine. What would this film have looked like had it been based in Topeka, Kansas? The characters were farmers, or accountants, or Walmart cashiers. Instead of sitting around a nice dinner table and drinking wine and eating pasta, they sat on there front porch and had hot dogs and beer? I guess I didn't need all of the artsy lifestyle embellishment.

  I found Whiplash terrifyingly intense, not because of the filmmaking (although that is extraordinary), but because I don't know whether I'm the Charlie Parker or the kid who dropped out to do pre-med.
