Unforgiven 1992
Phenomenal. Fitting that it came out the same year as McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses. Sometimes the stories we tell about cowboys come true, in all their bloody nature.

The Banshees of Inisherin 2022
Becoming an all time favorite. Absolutely devastating; McDonagh is working in a register equally intimate, absurd, and wildly allegorical, and it's transcendent. Speaks to me—as it did last year—in a way almost too personal to bear. Incantatory and sharp as a pair of shears. Will be revisiting often—this will always have a place in my personal canon as one of those works I want to live with.
Three shots that I will constantly be thinking about:

Small Things Like These 2024
Really good adaptation; somehow gets right the slow life with a sense of gnawing anxiety, the sense of a small life with the possibility to affect deep change, that was at the heart of the novel. I was worried it was going to lack the depth that was brought by Keegan's narration, but Cillian's fabulous performance and the camerawork really help to imbue every scene with the complexity of emotions at play. A really good movie—I would still recommend the book to everyone, but no violence was done here, and a lot of good was.
