  There was this really disturbing child ryhmm I knew as a kid, where you would pick a dandelion, and while holding the stem, press the tip of your thumb under the base of the flower head, firmly.

  And then we kids would sing, 'mama had a baby and it's head---'

  And then you flick your thumb up and watch the delicate yellow bloom launch into the air.

  '---popped off!'

  I have no idea where those lines come from.

  But this film made me remember that.

  Dear Monica,

  As you once stated to me, Shunji Iwai is one of Japan's greatest and most understated directors. When you first lent me All About Lily Chou Chou... I knew this to be the truth within minutes of watching the film.

  I wish I could have watched Hana & Alice and talked about it with you.
