I am not the demographic for this movie. I sat through it for my young children who liked it immensely. Kudos to Jim Carrey for never forgetting his slapstick roots. James Marsden was the silver lining in this movie for me. I cannot believe he’s in his 50s.
Have a kid in elementary school? Take them. They’ll love it.
Anna Kendrick as an actress is wonderful, but I think she truly shines as a director. This movie is loaded with tense scenes that will feel eerily familiar to many women. The uncertainty, nervousness and worry you might feel as a woman in the presence of a man who is making your skin prickle - Kendrick captures it wonderfully. She doesn’t use garish crime scenes to outline the horror of this killer, she lets the actors lean into the tension.…
One of my all time favorite films as a child. My parents didn’t believe in censorship and I devoured every Anne Rice book that was published. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt play their roles to perfection, and Kirsten Dunst in her first role gives a stunning performance. This movie didn’t rely on CG effects that would date it, it relied on the rich writing of Rice and the superb acting of the cast - one reason it’s held up decades later.
I watched this as a kid, and it became a staple fall movie for me. If this film doesn’t make you want to jump into autumn and smile goofily at Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in peak romcom performances - you might be a robot.
