"Alice, that was incredible. Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Incredible. Honestly one of the top 5 pieces of cinema I've ever seen." - my flatmate Aaron

Broadway by Light 1958
"Every evening an artificial dawn breaks in the heart of New York". Klein's intoxicating short drowns us in the blinding neon of the iconic advertising signs of Times Square. It modulates from vast static signs bearing the temptations of Fordist capitalism, to the balletic silhouettes of men changing the wording of theatre signs, to frenetic flashes of words and blinking lights to the soft reflection and merging of light in puddles on the street. Until finally the artificial day draws in as the sun ushers in a golden dawn. Spectacular, mesmerising, and even more impressive given it was made in the 1950s.
