Very cryptical and slightly uncomfortable at times, in classic Lynch style. What I found most intriguing was the exploration of the concept of duality - inner light vs darkness, blue vs red, Jeffrey vs Frank, Sandy vs Dorothy, "Blue Velvet" vs "In dreams".
Saw this today for the first time in probably 15 years and got absorbed by deep nostalgia, as I remembered how much my younger self would adore and innocently long for this type of storyline. I was also very surprised to realise how much these animations and simplified depictions of imperial Russia shaped my way of imagining the settings of Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy classics I read much later on. The movie also has some speech subtleties and the characters sometimes reflect attitudes I would totally misunderstand as a child. My favourite old animation movie.
This movie left me speechless in its way of picturing the unfiltered, raw struggles of the average, middle-class Romanian. I admired that it relatably navigates how living in a country that aspires so much to "Western standards", but that even after 35 years still fights communism in more-or-less-hidden forms, can grow so much rage and frustration inside you. My absolute favourite movie of Edward Norton, both his acting and the way the whole narrative shifts perspectives is absolutely genius.
