  Though it had moments of beauty and profound tragedy, I largely felt that this film was meandering and was wasting my time more than it was telling me a story. Bardem's performance carried the whole film, without question.

  First watch of our film club. Fascinating film that I was entirely unaware of prior to watching. Some spectacular performances. I've mixed feelings on some elements, but I absolutely understand the praise it appears to have received, and the Oscar wins were warranted.

  Coming to this film from a modern perspective with no nostalgia, it's honestly a bit of a slog. The final third or so is enjoyable enough, but the only moment of tension that really landed was the final scene on the escape craft.
