An incredible look at how trauma fractures the identity, and therefore, the reality. Mima’s movements from scene to scene often flow perfectly together; the way she performs choreography on stage somehow becomes exactly how she reaches for milk in the grocery store. They don’t make sense in the context of her time and her space because she’s not living the reality, she's living the dream along with us. To be a pop star is to be a puppet, to be…

Not totally inscrutable, but damn hard to climb inside of. Cassavetes is the king of taking a character study and lining it with broken glass. What a director, holy shit this man needed a hug, and BAD. Gena Rowlands might be one of my favorite actors ever at this point, an absolute legend at holding a wild surface tension of pain and not spilling a drop. In so many ways, an absolute Cheez Whiz delight. So much of the fun comes from the titular character, a suavecito, swashbuckling pig (played by a thoroughly Xanaxed Michael Keaton) and the inherent silliness of this premise being played straight up. I love the aesthetic, the light tone, the soaring moments of beauty (the "heaven" sequence is unexpectedly stunning for how childish and fun most of this movie is)... for the first half this had me without qualification.

    But the…
