I dunno, I'm starting to think Mann's movies just aren't for me. Deniro's character doesn't really come off as a distinct person that is separate from almost any other character I've seen him play.
I watched this movie because someone showed me the scene with the southern lawyer hollering in court and I thought it rocked and it did when that scene came up but the rest of the movie really didn't.
It does have one of the most unintentionally funny depictions of implausible computer UI from the 90s-early 2000s. I'll probably show that scene out of context to my friends
I read that Ridley Scott made the Duellists after being inspired by this movie and boy does it show. Two movies about the biggest dipshits one can imagine, men with zero capacity for introspection or empathy for those around them. Architects of their own destruction, doomed to failure and exile.
The photography in this movie is absolutely incredible, all the candle lit scenes and living paintings.
Also the scene where Barry clobbers his step son in front of a room…
A movie that when you see it you can't help but look back at a lifetime of movies and TV shows you've seen that it is now obvious were aping this movie. A true original.
I tried to watch this when I had a crazy COVID fever in February of 2020 and it set off my anxiety so bad I had to start the movie over like three times.
