‘Jai Bhim’ is brutal, important, and utterly riveting. An unflinching tale of India’s caste system, replete with police brutality, corruption, and systemic unfairness, is elevated by the magnetic Suriya, whose steely-eyed charisma makes his protagonist lawyer feel like a superhero. Deeply disturbing and difficult to watch at times - but coursing with a lightning hot streak of righting burning injustices - the unreliable narration brings verve to a shocking true-life story. Lengthy yet never decadent, the twists and turns of this violent tale unfold thrillingly. Highly recommended, and a true highlight of the legal genre.
A barmy and entirely involving odyssey of excess and musical reinvention in 70s/80s Manchester, this film eschews the rote trappings of usual biopics to bring its larger-than-life characters thrillingly to the screen, backed by a truly amazing soundtrack. Joy Division’s exploits are a highlight, with Harris’ Ian Curtis a tragic, tortured highlight. Coogan anchors the film with slippery, unreliable energy, and the creative involvement of the various parties involved in the real(ish) history elevates it, injecting soul and verve. It…
Very entertaining and unorthodox odd-couple buddy-cop dark comedy. Never quite maximises its full potential, but the wonderfully irascible Gleeson is finely matched by straight man Cheadle, and this is Strong at the peak of his era of playing villains. Some fine nuggets of quotable gold in McDonagh's sharp script, even if not on the level of something like 'In Bruges'. Tidy, enjoyable film.
