In an English speaking Bong Joon Ho movie, you can always expect there to be at least one performance from a known actor that steps it up to Nicholas Cage levels. This movie had a whole handful of actors doing that.
This movie is simultaneously interesting, stupid, on the nose, and unique. It's really funny at times, and rolling my eyes stupid other times. But that all comes together in an overall good way. I enjoyed it.
One thing that struck me watching this was the shots of the cities they visited. One especially showing off the wall of apartments built up after WWII. These remnants of the war paired with a story of pain really came together well.
Late review. I just saw that this was nominated for best picture and a bunch of awards, and I'm happy about that. This was one of the most unique movies I've seen in a long time, I'd say since Everything Everywhere All at Once. The movie has an energy and style that I loved.
That being said, there are very few people I think I could recommend this movie to. It's wild, graphic, and gross.
This movie had atmosphere if it had anything. If wasn't scary, but was a little creepy at times. Mostly I was impressed with the cinematography and the acting. I'd say it was very worth a watch.
I'd put this under the The Lighthouse as far as ranking in Eggers movies. Might be tied with one of his others but I find that hard to compare.
