    Grand Theft Hamlet

    ★★★★

This rendition of Hamlet seems limited by gameplay, but carries an unlimited budget in the world of GTA, making this the single most unique version of Hamlet put to screen. However, Grand Theft Hamlet's most impressive accomplishment is not in the production of Hamlet itself - it's in the way these people cultivated human connection in a world that is designed to be completely barren of it. Argento is the killer here - literally. The killer's hands in the black leather gloves are, indeed, his own. From the opening shot of the raven's gaze, I am pulled into a new way of seeing, as if the needles taped under Betty's eyes are my own eyes. Despite how iconic Ripley is, I would argue that Rain outshines her in every way. Rain as a character brings to the forefront themes that resonate more in Alien: Romulus than in any of its predecessors. It is about choosing righteousness and the unyielding responsibility that comes with it. "Stay behind me" is much more difficult to say in the world of Alien, therefore speaking to the intrinsic value of life - whether it's someone yet to be born, or someone about to die.

    The Blair Witch Project

    ★★★★★

The Blair Witch Project is a significant monument in both found footage and internet horror, finding its impact through the power of suggestion rather than the spectacle the characters are hoping to capture. It ties its own mythos so tightly into the story, that the mystery of Black Hills Forest is more real than supernatural. The footage of the three missing filmmakers confronts the internet's fascination over true crime, and questions the morality of being entertained by someone's tragedy.
