Re-review after rewatching. My biggest issue the first time I saw it was that the main character’s transformation into a vengeance-driven killer was too sudden and didn’t fit with what we knew about him up to that point. After watching this movie again, I see now there are quite a few subtle signs of his gradual shift, and Ryan Gosling’s excellent facial acting conveys some of his thought process. This was a really enjoyable and engaging watch.
Not even 20 minutes in, I was tearing up because of that scene where Grey starts crying as his mom is doing everything for him due to being a quadriplegic.
The action is great, and the writing is strong in my opinion. Every character’s motivations made sense. The only plot flaw I can think of is why Cortez didn’t call for backup when pursuing Grey, but it doesn’t matter much anyways because…

This is the first movie I’ve ever seen that made me physically sick and feel extremely cold.
There is no amount of preparation I could have gone through to steel myself for it. I don’t believe anyone can possibly prepare themselves for this movie.
I think this deserves the title of THE anti-war movie.
