Hereditary 2018
Paranormal horror films just don’t do it for me… yes the performances are great and some shots are creepy. However, I feel the main reason for a horror film is to make you feel scared. Not only did I not feel scared I felt confused by the narrative and have more questions after watching this film than before I hit play.

Nickel Boys 2024
I appreciate the artistic choice of the production to use first person direction… however for 2 hour plus film it became more distracting than powerful. That being said the characters and cinematography do emphasise the sadness and tragedy experienced by the inmates and their community. You feel a level of intimate connection with the characters whilst feeling locked in to their perspective, much like how they are locked in with any remorse.

A Real Pain 2024
This is a masterclass in filmmaking! The use of show and don’t tell direction, locked frames when they visit the concentration camp and still shots of their location gives you a detailed idea of the environment they’re in. The dialogue is excellent filled with pain and reason whilst also coming across as human and natural. Kieran Culkin is outstanding ( which is why he won an Oscar) but Jesse Eisenberg compliments the duo perfectly. This achieves everything is sets out…

Her 2013
Joaquin Phoenix at his brilliant best. His performance was sincere and heartfelt which must have been difficult without another actor opposite him for most of the film. Although the film was funny and thought provoking, it also instilled anxious fear in me. This Dystopian world that had been created feels like it’s not too far away from reality… something I am not happy about!
