  A few good laughs. Didn’t like PJ’s character at all, but I realize that such an unlikeable, impulsive character was necessary to drive the plot.

  Sembene has this knack for encapsulating the story of Africa, past and present, in works that could really be so simple. I love the attention paid to how the modern woman fits, or doesn’t, into the vast landscape of African morality, religion, and culture. Kiné is such a force and represents the resilience of African mothers across generations.
