Hit different when i was 15 and didn’t really understand it but wanted to impress the hipster guy i had a crush on than it does now when i’m 30 and have been in both healthy and very much not healthy relationships. Lots that’s inventive about it, but it’s difficult to buy that there’s a universe where clementine and joel would ever stay together. I took an edible that hit—violently—about the same time they crossed over into the Country of california, and then, in between worrying i’d be physically unable to get up, i got really depressed about how capitalism can devour critiques of itself and spit them back out into an advertisement to generate more profit, in the sense that this is a toy commercial wrapped in gen x feminist sensibilities. one of my hugest pet peeves is when media acknowledges its ~self-awareness as a means of trying to excuse its shittiness (whether plot-related or, like, bigotry -- "look, we mentioned this is stupid/bad/misogynistic, so you can't fault us for it being stupid/bad/misogynistic!"). this did it to the point that i feel like somebody on the creative team was specifically trying to be passive aggressive to a producer or something and intentionally tanked the entire movie in the process.
