Given that this started life as an adaptation of Doctor Strange - that decided to keep making the movie even after they lost the rights - and Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of that character, I was expecting Jeffrey Combs' Doctor Mordrid to be a little bit closer to the arrogant prick that his Re-Animator character, Doctor Henry West, was. He's actually one of the more likeable characters Combs has played and very different from the legally distinct Marvel Comics character he's…
It meanders here and there and the plot is maybe just a bit over complicated, but it's a unique angle on a Slasher - with lots of science mumbo jumbo - and you can only BARELY tell that it was filmed in New Zealand! Also, it's got Jimmy Olsen, Nurse Ratched, and Billy the Kid from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Oh, you murdered someone and you have a yacht? You bet your ass Lt. Columbo will bumble around, annoying the bejezzus out of you, until you slip up and give your game away!
It's hard to pin down where this movie fits, but I did like a lot of it and if I'd happened upon it on a lazy Saturday afternoon in 1987, it might've been one of my favorites like Ice Pirates.
However, although I appreciate the craft and comedic potential behind the lead actor (and writer, and director) and the vision he has, his titular character crosses that line from endearing to annoying a little too often. Perhaps if the movie were about 20 minutes shorter and edited just a bit tighter, it could've been cooler.
