What’s the difference between a concept and a gimmick? I think that this is a detrimental question that this film tries to answer. To start out with the negatives I believe this film has particularly dry dialogue at points but performances such as Ethan Hawke are truly amazing. I can understand and appreciate the pacing of this film and how this story moves along, snapshots and chapters throughout Mason’s life. It gives such an endearing feeling as you’re watching him…

Movie had many good qualities. Sound design was impeccable and cinematography was on point. Nicolas Cage’s performance was outstanding and uncomfortable. I think this movie didn’t know what it was until the end of the film. I felt like it had so many elements that they needed to balance and all of those elements ended up being half baked by the end.

Profound movie, hard to watch at times. Makes you sick to your stomach the words coming out of the main characters mouth, and the actions on screen. But the story keeps you captivated the whole way through watching Derek’s transformation. The film shows its talent most in its realistic yet intimate dialogue. The cinematography as well feels raw, intimate, and downright beautiful at times. From what I’m learning, the greatest films don’t have typically “good” endings but controversial and divisive ones. Maybe to leave you with something to think?

The stakes are high with this one. Robert Pattinson does an amazing job as Connie. Beautiful soundtrack and beautiful cinematography. The stakes are constantly high and the way Connie evades problems through action and dialogue really keep you hooked during the runtime. That being said, watching this movie knowing that this was the precursor to Uncut Gems, it is very apparent. Especially with the ending of the movie. As the Safdie Brothers continue to produce more films you can see…
