The Substance 2024
The rather gruesome scenes are substantiated only to a certain extent.
While I value the references to cinematographic classics and the immaculate portrayal of obsession (in my view inspired by Aronofsky’s Black Swan), the final scenes detracted from the main message and forced some to leave the cinema.
I realise that only the more experienced and impervious-to-cruelty viewers were indirectly invited to stay; however, the importance of the message should not be trumped by the distastefulness of certain scenes.

Secret Window 2004
A true disappointment. David Koepp is a talented screenwriter; however, his role as a director of Secret Window was not his best performance. The movie is indeed based on a rather gripping story by Steven King. Nonetheless, the film’s plot is mundane due to similarities with other books and productions, such as Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Nolan’s Memento, and (albeit to a smaller extent) Fincher’s Fight Club.
