    Opus

    ★★★

Opus is fine and engaging when you're watching it. It looks nice and is another nice addition to Ayo Edebiri's rising star status. It has some gross moments that look really gnarly and it's a pleasure always to see John Malkovich too. It's hard to say if I'll remember much more from it. It feels incredibly derivative of other recent thrillers, and the ending becomes just too predictable. Also, always find it amusing when you watch a movie about the…

    Paddington in Peru

    ★★★★

Paddington in Peru is missing the smarter commentary of the other two films but that's okay. This still is charming and well-put together as a film, although I do wish there was more of a focus on the titular bear. It also feels a tad more unfocused than the other two, although I will also say that Paddington's worst movie yet is still easily better than most of the films of its ilk. It's a delightful and emotional watch, and…

    Pootie Tang

    ★★★★

Pootie Tang is absolutely ludicrous and all the better for it. It's such silly fun with so much inane details to it that it feels like a live-action cartoon in how ridiculous it can be. It's a quick watch with great appearances by Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes, but ultimately, it's a movie that feels hard to find any fault in - it's just a great stupid comedy. Bonkers in the best sense, Pootie Tang deserves all the hype it can get.

I watched 13 Going on 30 for my podcast. It Happened One Podcast! Co-hosted by my wife Shanté, every week we watch a movie focusing on a romantic relationship and talk about it as a real life couple. Will we learn something from the on screen couple or maybe offer some advice from our own relationship? Our latest episode tackles 13 Going on 30. We are also available on Apple Podcasts. Hope you all check it out!

    ★★★★★

Move over Christopher Nolan! The Emoji Movie is easily the greatest film of 2017 and a striking condemnation of all who have insulted its very existence. A brilliant commentary of how the modern world's over-reliance on texting and pictures to portray emotion, this film does exactly that. When Gene the Meh Emoji is denied the love of his father because he actually enjoys being alive, it's a perfect representation of how toxic masculinity prevents one feeling emotions other than raw…

The Nice Guys is ridiculously fun. There's no other way to describe it. It's a solid two hours of non-stop enjoyment, even with a couple of flaws here and there. Before talking about those issues though, let's dwell for a bit on what makes this a truly brilliant summer blockbuster - or at least, what would make it so if audiences had embraced it. Instead, it will have to be happy with being an underseen gem.
