The Virgin Suicides 1999
Not something I’d expect to relate with, and for what it’s worth I think this movie is impenetrable by design. Sofia Coppola’s first movie seems to relish both in the images of purity and adolescence that its eponymous 5 siblings conjure up, while dancing around the harm and alienation that those images leave in their societal wake.

I’m realizing that all of my reviews of a certain kind of late-90s movie end up as a high four stars. It might be that I’m a sucker for this era and leave all discernment behind, but I like to think it’s because filmmakers hit a certain stride here where they were able to transmogrify shit into gold. They take a trite setup, really superficial ideas and end up with projects that feel epic if you don’t look too closely.…
