That perfect mix of Kiwi humor and sentimentality. I have to say, this was Taika's shining moment.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence 1983
Personally, I am a fan of the clashing acting styles and cultures and believe they illuminate the dynamics between the two countries (which contain both strong similarities and stark differences) and the cast all do a phenomenal job. The cinematography is excellent because as Bowie notes you can FEEL the camp without having to see too much of it. I listen to Sakamoto's score pretty much on a regular basis.

Dark Passage 1947
This is actually my favorite Bogart film. It’s the most tense narrative, as well as the most aesthetically compelling and risk taking. He may not bring anything especially distinctive from his usual performances, but this is where his style probably fits the best. There’s also a lot to be said for his chemistry with Bacall who he had fleshed out his on- and off- screen relationship with very extensively by this point. It’s a bonafide classic, but also an underrated gem.

The 39 Steps 1935
An eighty five year old film without a dull moment. Every shot is thrilling by the quality and depth of the lighting and tone and an excellent depth of field for its time and the tension keeps building throughout the plot. Donat drives it brilliantly with a perfect lead performance and is also well-written as a sympathetic protagonist.
