  Watched this sometime in January but stopped halfway because the version i had was in 480p and couldn’t get rid of the spanish subtitles so i couldn’t understand the russian dialogue at all. Finally finished it! So many themes: power dynamics, class struggles, desperation to change one’s life.   I feel like the concept had potential yet they didn’t make it as fun as they could have? The holiday montage was full of unnecessary bits. Needed more banter! Camera-work was so distracting. The mall thing is actually so filipino coded like yassss Emma Robredo

  Leonardo DiCaprio has NOTHING on Paprika. The back half of this movie had me forgetting time was passing; I became so engrossed and immersed in the world, and I find that that specific feeling is hard to come by nowadays (personally).

  You can never watch a guillermo del toro film straightforwardly because there’s almost always an underlying message. After much thinking, the magic being part of Ofelia’s defense mechanism is a good interpretation. But i’d like to believe that, for a brief moment of her life, the magical encounters were very real :)
