A pretty basic plot that’s highly elevated by Wong Kar Wai’s directing, which feels more or less fully-formed right at the beginning of his career. What could be a glorified Mean Streets remake becomes a emotional thrill ride with a beautiful look throughout. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 1970
I was very surprised by this one. This is the earliest Argento film I've seen and in some ways it's the best. Maybe there's something about sticking to genre conventions that makes his early work so effective. There's not a great deal to describe that would distinguish this from dozens of gialli of its time: you've got the black gloves, the lady killer, the hard-nosed but well-intentioned detective. Despite this, it really stands out in Argento's filmography for me.
