  pure grime, misery, and desolation. this is what conservatism achieves in all its glory. “take me back to dear old Blighty” some may say.

  caricaturesque and melodramatic at times but still beautifully raw. it was particularly nostalgic for me because that desolate, rural southern-european landscape is where my grandparents grew up and enjoyed spectacles such as the ones shown in the movie (hey, my grandfather was a famous trumpeter in the region!). and as someone who was brought up catholic, i feel like it’s the first time i see holy week captured sublimely (or at all) in a film.
