  One Hour in Wonderland 1950

  Well…, yikes.

  • One part Coca-Cola advertisement,
  • one part super-creepy ventriloquist hitting on adolescent girls, 
  • one part Disney animation clip show,
  • one part Disney television special (Disney’s first), and…
  • one part Christmas special?! Well, maybe, I guess…, but I think this is mostly Christmasy because it was created to air on Christmas Day, 1950.

  More than anything else, this is a historical curiosity, and, while I’m glad it’s been preserved, I don’t really want to revisit any time soon.

  A bit slow, and—yes—there are other issues, but a Tetris origin story nestled in a Cold War thriller? Of course I’m in. It’s not The Social Network, but neither is it Pixels. Enough here to keep my attention and plenty to enjoy. Now, where’s my Gameboy?

  Charles and Lucie 1979

  Not what I’d anticipated, this film was both more tragic and also, perhaps, more moving than the Criterion Channel synopsis had suggested. Also, I hadn’t expected to recognize counterparts to these characters in people I know in my own life, but there’s no mistaking it, and that definitely lent greater weight to my experience with the film.
