Holy mother of sauce, this is just absolutely stunning. The night-street/chase and the sewer sequences are just something else entirely. Just the harsh lighting, sharp compositions and tasteful use of Dutch angles alone — I don’t know all too much about cinematography but I’m blown away by what Robert Krasker and Carol Reed has done. If you’ve seen it, what a way to end as well. Grahm Greene’s flawless script on top of it all to add. Just simply impeccable from every aspect.

To me, this was a tremendously lurid exploration of human identity — the question of whether it is the memories and experiences or the realisation and shared understanding (which we call empathy) that define and shape what is ‘human’. Kogonada seems to suggest that both are necessary.
