Beau Is Afraid 2023
there are moments in this film of true brilliance, the kind of writing/execution that really speak to me. and there are periods of this film that really drag.
very charlie kaufman synecheoche-esque, which i see as a plus.
the first 30 or so minutes, until the stabbing, are electric. I was entranced.
there are some insane cameos in beau that added to the insanity. two specifically you only hear until they reappear much later in the film.
not often can a film pair genuine existential dread with profound horror.

i have recently re read ubik and the three stigmata of palmer eldritch this year, and wanted to revisit this. this may be the most faithful adaptation of pkd ive seen.
with enough pkd exposure you can get a feel for the shape of his stories, common themes of surveillance stare, mind altering drugs as a form of escapism from bureaucratic existence. a juke, an unjuke, and then a rejuke at the end. really is a work of art.
the cast is necessarily stacked for this, many of them at the peak or their game.
the cel shaded/rotoscoped animation blends so perfectly with the pkd style.
