I’m not sure what to call it. I liked it. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a story so comfortably told as this this one. Easily should be considered one of the great movies of the 70’s which I know is saying a lot, but tell me, why not?
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Menswear, jazzhead mood-boardiness (all of which I’m a sucker for) gets in the way of a good story; I remember more vividly the original pressing of Chet Baker Sings they dropped on the ground and Jude’s flawless Italian knitwear than what drove Matt Damon to go about killing all those people.
Speaking of, that may be this film’s deficit, lack of character development - though in its defense, it coincides well with Mr. Ripley’s lack of character.
Follow baduncadunc for better takes on this one, apparently he reviews it approximately q 4 months. Doing the Lord’s work.
Enough bad stuff has been said about this one already. Cursed by the fact it will always be compared to Inception, which is never far from one’s mind as they sit through this film. You wonder how far it was from Nolan’s.
JDW was extremely like-able. I hope to see more of him. Pattinson performs well in a grown up role, as we all knew he would.
Nolan didn’t need to make this movie. Or maybe he did. If so, it’s an expensive way to work out your growing pains, either way I look forward to what Nolan brings us once he takes a beat.
