The influence of the transcendental trifecta (Dreyer, Ozu, Bresson) is fully evident in this picture - while still feeling wholly original and personal to Schrader's voice. Opening credits of text cards over a tightly woven texture recall the opening of an Ozu picture. A deadpan narration and early sequence detailing the stark repetition of prison life evokes A Man Escaped. And Dreyer's use of whiteness as a visual purifier on screen appears in the mise-en-scene of protagonist Bill Tell's motel…
I like a film where the environment seems to pop off the screen and engulf you. River's Edge does this to a magnificent degree. First time viewer's may find the exaggerated performances off-putting, but once you are accustomed to the style it becomes easy to lose yourself in the world.
