  Soviet cinema helps me rationalize the love for movies I respond to. I admire their brutal collectivist artifact à la the pyramids, but it always stops short of greatness before the individual's ingenuity of Michelangelo's David (sculpted under the equally repressive Medici regime).

  Scorcese treating stationary camera as a cardinal sin produced some great fucking shots in this one.
  In one such shot, we see Harvey keitel trying to peep through his window and the camera pans to his left and suddenly the perspective of being a voyeur shifts from Keitel to the audience. Not bad for your third fiction film.
