It starts well, when it looks pretty and we don't know anything about it.
Wants to affect the stylings of a detective procedural. Doesn't want to put the thought in to actually making a good one. So it handwaves its contrivances by saying "Ooh that Satan up to his old tricks again!", as it plods from one sequence of spoooooky imagery to the next.

The dingiest, sweatiest mutilation of the senses I've yet experienced. Just a hideous mass of tender flesh and iron, glued together with claustrophobic set design captured in the outright tyrannical, yet still chaotically inhuman fashion. The sound is very important to realising this disturbing atmosphere. The constant grinding and growling of everything married with a thumping industrial soundtrack. Fuck yeah, perfection of the form.

It's like if Joker wasn't melodramatic nonsense.
Yeah real good movie, gorgeous yet understated soundtrack evokes classical ideas of romance played against the decaying veneer of post-war Rome.
Antonio Ricci is a great character, never quite able to cope with his predetermined role in society and never convincing in any of said roles. Breadwinner, tough guy, strong father figure. Never really pans out for old Antonio, as he proceeds to debase himself before every closely-held fibre of his being.

Meh. Some really well done scenes of a troubled man struggling in a world set against his existence, that are unfortunately crowded out by a sludge of melodramatic tripe and crappy dialogue. It just feels like a constant cavalcade of shit pouring on Arthur's head the whole time with nothing actually going in his favour. Kind of like a college nihilist's goofy portrayal of gritty mean-spirited urban life.
