A Patch of Blue 1965
the way this film explores changing perceptions of race and bigotry in the 1960s is fascinating. the absurdity of social prejudice is highlighted by a series of contrasts. how can a blind girl be racist? it has its problems… but the main points are communicated succinctly and with enough heart to (mostly) excuse them. sidney poitier’s presence is quieting. his confidence highlights shelly winters’ instability and childishness. both performances elevate this above its premise. bittersweet.
