johnnie to's darkest film and, really, one of the darkest i've ever seen. to has emerged as cinema's simenon (cinemon): one might have trouble identifying a single masterpiece within his massive body of work, but each film functions as kind of a piece in a larger masterwork. he's capable of a ferocity, beauty, strangeness, and humor most film directors can't even imagine.

mid-day screenings at MOMA are packed with droves of oldsters trying to get their money's worth on discounted yearly museum subscriptions -- these fuckers will see anything. a few years back i caught a double feature of vigo's zéro de conduite and genet's un chant d'amour. first picture goes off fine. genet's masterpiece rolls around and the fogies are in near hysterics: couple of walkouts, some grumbling, uncomfortable shifting & fidgeting, and a few shouts at the screen and/or projectionist… it's nice to know genet can still shock.

an email from a friend (and great film scholar):

'I predict in 10 to 20 years Only God Forgives will be completely rehabilitated critically and regarded as a great film that was misunderstood in its time... in the way that most of Kubrick's films were.'

    yep.
