The movie is so over-the-top gory that it's actually funny. The whole "youth and beauty fading in Hollywood" theme has been done to death, but the way it's handled here puts a fresh spin on it and makes it work. It gets across everything Abel Tesfaye tried to say in The Idol—but actually pulls it off.
I prefer a film with a unique script and aesthetic over a generic blockbuster, no matter how good it is. But The Lobster is 119 minutes of unrestrained absurdity and overflowing eccentricity, filled with powerful metaphors about the meaning and scope of relationships. It has left me wanting to see more from Yorgos Lanthimos.
