Something Different 1963

Sunday in Peking 1956
The voice-over is both so blatantly orientalist and intentionally shallow that it only serves to show us the impossibility of doing anything but scratching the surface. Marker could never be anything other than a stranger looking in, and instead of pretending to, he goes in the opposite direction. It's all an exaggerated performance, with acrobats, dancers and gymnasts at the front and center. It works to a degree, but I still have the feeling he wanted to make something completely different. It's not as experimental as his later work, and is overall less interesting because of it.
